Intersubjective to Teotl
For some time I have found myself relating within and without according to Stolorow’s expression that “Affect--that is subjective emotional experience--is something that from birth onward is regulated, or misregulated, within ongoing relational systems.” A glowing new concept to myself when I first took it in; however, not new to the world. Since then I have (re)discovered the concept of Teotl, which precedes Stolorow’s expression and encapsulates so much more.
Stolorow’s expression seems to give credence to the effects of intersubjective systems, or relationships. This concept provided me with a framework, which I was thirsting for at the time, that fit into my understanding of how one person may affect another. Teotl, similarly and contrastly, provided me a cosmos view, beyond an 8x11 sheet of paper. Affect is a current in the frame and there are so many other variables to consider. Far too many, really. I just prefer to get to know my own frame so I may better understand when I swerve into another’s. Or vice versa.
